Making Game Art Assets with Talos: 12 Spirits in 10 Minutes

Pokémon-style card games have become one of the hotter directions among indie developers in recent years, and a set of presentable spirit illustrations is the first hurdle after a project is greenlit. A card game built around 12 elements needs 12 spirit illustrations on its own, all of them in a consistent style. Producing that batch by hand usually takes an indie developer 3–5 days (estimate), and the quote and turnaround for outsourcing are separate line items. With Talos, this session produced 12 spirit illustrations in a single consistent style in 10 minutes 23 seconds.

The real difficulty with game art assets is consistency: 12 images have to look like they came from the same game, with line weight, shading, light direction and color palette all aligned. The moment one image goes its own way, the whole batch falls apart. The second difficulty is elemental color — metal, wood, water, fire, earth, lightning, space, time, wind, ice, dark and light: each of the 12 elements has to be recognizable, without departing from the same art style. General-purpose image generators can produce a single attractive image, but delivering 12 at once with the style locked down calls for an extra method. The goal here was a complete set of spirit illustrations that could be dropped straight onto a vertical card face.

Step 1: State the requirement once, in full

The complete requirement entered in this session:

That requirement contains four key elements:

Subject and style anchor: a Pokémon-style card game. Element list: metal, wood, water, fire, earth, lightning, space, time, wind, ice, dark and light — 12 in total. Canvas constraint: vertical cards, one spirit image per element. Process requirement: settle the style direction first, then keep later images consistent with it.

Step 2: Talos proposes three style directions for the user to choose

Talos did not start generating the full batch. Following the production workflow for art assets, it did three things first:

1. Ask to confirm: verify that the element list counts 12, that the card ratio is 3:4, that this batch delivers spirit illustrations only, and whether there are any style reference images.
2. Propose style directions: run the same "fire spirit + fire skill icon" through three structurally distinct directions, 6 sketches in total.
3. Build a comparison sheet: combine the 6 sketches into one comparison image so the user could pick a direction by number.

The three directions differed structurally at three levels — line, shading and form: thin outline + two-stage shading + highlight; thick outline + flat fill; no outline + painterly volume. The user chose "cartoon outline with gradient" (thin outline, two-stage shading, highlight, light from upper left).

Step 3: Lock the style and deliver 12 in two batches

Once the direction was settled, Talos wrote that version of the style into a style lock: the English descriptions of line, shading, material and light direction fixed word for word, with the dark outline #2d2a4a shared across the whole batch. For the 12-element color requirement it used a "lock the fixed block, swap the elemental color on its own" approach — each element replaces only its own primary, secondary and highlight colors, with not a word of the line and lighting description changed.

Images were then generated in batches of 6:

After each batch, a quality check ran before moving to the next: consistent dimensions, transparent background, no text, subject share of frame and centering. In the first batch, the Lightning image was stopped twice by the image generator's safety review; after the spirit's appearance description was rewritten it passed, and the result still belongs to the same art style as the other 11.

The whole session took about 10 minutes.

Output structure

All 12 illustrations are full-body, front-facing and on a transparent background, at a uniform size of 1536×2048 and a 3:4 ratio — the same proportion as a vertical card face, so they drop straight in.

Talos generated 12 spirit illustrations in 10 minutes 23 seconds, covering 12 elements at a uniform size and ratio, on transparent backgrounds that can go straight into an engine or onto a vertical card. Alongside the 12 finished images, the session also produced a style lock, a list of 12 prompts, a contact-sheet preview and an asset specification sheet.

One-off production: spirit art, the biggest bottleneck once a card game is greenlit, drops from days to a dozen or so minutes, and the cost of trial and error falls very low.

Repeat production: once the style lock is saved, icons, props and scenes for the same game reuse the same lock and stay in the same style, with no realignment needed.

Style consistency: the style lock fixes line, shading and lighting word for word, so the 12 images differ only in subject design and elemental color — laid out in a row, they never look like they came from different games.

Format compatibility: transparent PNGs at a uniform ratio fit directly into the card layout; when card frames and card text are added later, the illustration layer needs no rework.

1. Settle the direction first, then batch: run the same subject through several structurally distinct style directions, let the person who owns the requirement choose, and only then start the batch — avoiding a full redo.
2. Write the style as one sentence: line + shading + material + lighting + color, fixed into a description that is not casually changed; each asset swaps only the subject.
3. Handle multi-variant subjects separately: when a batch needs different colors, lock line and lighting and vary only the elemental color — the easiest way to protect consistency.
4. Let the tool ask first: for element count, ratio and intended use that the requirement does not spell out, have the tool ask before starting; that is where rework is smallest.

Q: Can these illustrations go straight into a game engine?

A: Yes. The finished files are transparent PNGs at 1536×2048 with a 3:4 ratio, no background and no ground shadow, so they can go into an engine or onto a card face directly. If the engine requires another size, one more scaling pass is needed.

Q: Can 12 images really stay in the same style?

A: Yes. The method is to write the style as a style lock and reuse the line, shading and lighting descriptions word for word, varying only the subject design and elemental color. After each batch, a quality check confirms transparent background, dimensions and subject share of frame before continuing.

Q: If I am unhappy with one image, can I change just that one?

A: Yes. Edit one prompt and regenerate that image; the whole batch does not need to be rerun. Elemental colors can be swapped individually too, without affecting the other 11.

Q: Can this method be reused for other game art assets?

A: Yes. Skill icons, props, UI elements and scene concept art can all follow the same "settle the style, lock the fixed block, swap the subject" workflow; only the canvas size and purpose differ by asset type.
